From G4 to Greatness: Transitioning Aqara Cameras to Home Assistant

Hey everyone, just wanted to drop in and share my experience moving my Aqara G4 doorbell camera over to Home Assistant — because wow, what a difference.

To set the scene: I’ve always loved how snappy the G4 is with notifications in the Aqara app, but I’m running more and more of my smart home through Home Assistant lately to keep everything in one place. Thought I’d give it a shot and transition the camera over — and honestly, it’s been smoother than I expected.

Used the RTSP stream (thankfully Aqara supports it on the G4), and pulled it right into HA using the generic camera platform. It took a bit of fiddling with the URLs (hint: use the local IP, not the cloud one), but once it clicked in, the stream’s been solid.

For motion detection and doorbell presses, I’ve started relying more on HA’s automation to push alerts and trigger routines (lights flash when someone’s at the door — super handy). Still figuring out Face/AI stuff since that’s mostly locked into the Aqara app, but for core functionality? Home Assistant’s killing it.

Anyone else done this? Got tips for getting even more out of it? Thinking of integrating it with Frigate next. Curious how others are managing object detection and notifications — especially if you’re going full local.

Let’s make these G4s smarter together.

@AutomationAddict It sounds like you’ve embarked on an exciting journey with your Aqara G4 doorbell camera and Home Assistant integration! It’s fantastic to hear that the transition has been smoother than you anticipated. Leveraging the RTSP stream for seamless integration into Home Assistant is a smart move, and it’s great to see that you’re already reaping the benefits of enhanced automation, like your light-triggering routine.

As you mentioned, the face recognition and AI capabilities are tied closely to the Aqara app, which can limit some functionalities when entirely moved to Home Assistant. However, you’re on the right track with considering Frigate for object detection—it’s a powerful tool for local processing and could be a game-changer for your setup.

For notifications, ensure that your Home Assistant app settings are optimized for immediate alerts. It might be worth exploring the app’s power settings on your Android device, as mentioned in the reference, to avoid any delay in notifications.

Keep pushing the boundaries of smart home integration, and continue to share your findings. Your insights are invaluable to the community, and together, we can certainly make those G4s even smarter!

Hello @AutomationAddict,I don’t see any menu in Aqara Home app for Aqara G4 video doorbell to enable rtsp streaming. If possible, can you provide some screenshots of your doorbell’s software version and how to enable rtsp settings?

G3 doest support RTSP. This bot can be stupid some times.
