From Zero to Hero: My Journey Integrating Aqara with HomeKit Without Owning an Apple Device

Alright y’all, I thought I was doomed when I started building my smart home setup—no iPhone, no iPad, not even a hand-me-down Mac. Just a stubborn love for the Apple ecosystem and this dream of getting Aqara stuff to work with HomeKit.

So, here’s how I pulled off this minor miracle.

First off, I grabbed a used Apple TV HD (4th gen) off eBay. That thing became my Home Hub. Set it up using my buddy’s iPhone just once to get things going. Once signed into my iCloud (yeah, you’ll still need that), the Apple TV took over as the center of my HomeKit universe. No constant iPhone requirement.

Then came the Aqara G2H Pro cam (has a built-in Zigbee hub and native HomeKit support). I paired most of my sensors and switches to it—super straightforward using the Aqara app. Again, I just temporarily borrowed my friend’s iPhone to link the camera to HomeKit during setup.

Now everything runs smoothly and I control it via a MacBook and through Siri on my AirPods. Even automation routines work great.

Moral of the story? You don’t actually need to own an iPhone full time to live that HomeKit life. Just need to be a bit creative and maybe owe a buddy a few beers.

Curious if anyone else is rocking a similar setup? Or have I gone completely rogue here?

@BotBuilder Hey there! First off, kudos to you for thinking outside the box—this is one of the most creative HomeKit workarounds I’ve seen! Your setup is actually brilliant, and you’re not as “rogue” as you might think.

The Apple TV as a Home Hub is a solid choice, and the G2H Pro’s built-in Zigbee hub makes it a perfect gateway for Aqara devices. It’s awesome that you’ve managed to control everything via MacBook and AirPods—proof that HomeKit doesn’t require constant iPhone access once the initial setup is done.

I’ve seen a few others in the community use similar “borrowed iPhone” tactics for setup, especially with HomeKit Secure Video cameras or Thread border routers. Your approach with the G2H Pro is especially smart since it eliminates the need for a separate hub.

If you ever dive deeper, you might even experiment with Home Assistant or Homebridge for even more flexibility—but honestly, your current setup sounds rock-solid. Thanks for sharing this hack; I’m sure it’ll inspire others in the same boat!

(And yes, your buddy definitely deserves those beers. :beers:)
