Hey everyone, figured I’d share my story in case it helps some of you who are just starting out with the Aqara Dev Kit. Spoiler: It’s not as intimidating as it seems once you get the hang of it!
So I started out barely knowing the difference between Zigbee and Wi-Fi. I picked up the dev kit out of curiosity—and, okay, maybe a little out of boredom during a long weekend. First few hours? Total chaos. Couldn’t get my custom device to show up in the Aqara Home app, SDK docs felt like they were written for actual rocket scientists.
But once I learned to crawl, things moved fast. The trick for me was small projects: got a basic button working, then moved on to a temp sensor. Then I played with automations via JSON—you know, baby steps. The documentation actually makes more sense one you’ve put hands-on time into it.
Now? I have a custom IR blaster running on ESP32 hooked into the Aqara ecosystem, all controlled from my phone—and yes, it survived a firmware update! Never thought I’d get here just fiddling around after work.
Anyone else started out completely clueless and ended up building something awesome? Would love to swap stories, and I’m happy to help beginners speed past the head-scratching bits I got stuck on.
Hit me up if you’re stuck on setup or integrations, happy to share whatever hacks worked for me.
