Alright, just had to share this after finally making the jump to the Aqara G4 – and let me tell you, it’s been a game changer for my home automation setup. I’m still pretty new to all this (just started dabbling in HA like 6 months ago), but after some trial and error, this upgrade feels like hitting the jackpot.
I was using an older video doorbell from another brand, and integrating it with HomeKit was always a hit or miss. Notifications were late, streaming laggy, and more often than not, it just wouldn’t work when I actually needed it. Enter the G4.
Setup was surprisingly smooth, no fancy tech skills needed – scanned the code, added it to HomeKit, and boom, it was ready. One thing I immediately loved: native HomeKit Secure Video support. It stores my events in iCloud and I can check footage without relying on random 3rd-party apps.
Another thing I didn’t expect to appreciate so much: the face recognition. It actually learns over time, and now it’s notifying me exactly who’s at the door – super useful when I’m not home. I’ve also set up automations like turning on porch lights when someone’s detected at night, and even triggering my smart lock if it recognizes a familiar face.
Only thing I’d say to keep in mind: positioning is key. Took me a couple tweaks to get the camera angle and Wi-Fi signal right. Also, if you’re using it wired, make sure your transformer is up to spec. I learned that the hard way.
Would love to hear how others are using the G4 – any creative automations? Or pairing it with other Aqara gear? I’m hooked now and looking to level up even more.
