I was nervous buying a Meross MSS315 Matter over WiFi smart plug, as there isn’t a huge amount of anecdotal info on pairing and monitoring power usage with the Aqara M3 hub.
Meross made it awkward to setup and I needed to disable 5Ghz WiFi on my router before the Meross app on my Samsung phone would “talk” to the plug!
Once the plug was set up in the Meross app and firmware updated, I shared it’s Matter credentials to the Aqara app. At first, the plug only appeared as a simple plug with on/off - I needed to set up the power monitoring services in my Aqara app, which then created a second separate power monitoring device.
This is the fun part. Our laundry room is separate from the house and we constantly forget to collect our clean clothes. My partner asked for an “annoying” reminder, so we cannot ignore it!
I created a few automations based on the power usage of our (not-smart) washing machine.
1- when the power usage rises to 50W, this “run once” automation enables the next automation.
2- the next “run once” automation waits for the power usage to return to 2W and sends a custom notification to every phone with the Aqara app to say that the wash cycle is complete and enables the next automation.
3- This third automation sends a notification for every 15 minutes that the machine sits at 2W. It also plays a custom MP3 of a clown horn that I had uploaded to the audio library of the M3 hub. This automation runs until someone goes to the laundry room and presses an IKEA matter button which triggers a final automation which cancels this automation and enables the first automation which will then wait for the washing machine to be used next time.
My partner hates it, but it works perfectly! We collect the washing straight away!
