After months of planning, I finally tackled my long-awaited game room lighting project. The goal was to illuminate my shelves in a way that enhances both aesthetics and functionality, especially for filming and photography. Here’s my journey and some tips for anyone looking to embark on a similar project.
The Challenge
My shelves are built-in and heavily reinforced, making them nearly impossible to dismantle. This posed a significant hurdle when it came to installing LED strips. I had to get creative, and the solution involved running a 65ft roll of RGBIC strip lights through the existing structure. It was a meticulous process, requiring me to snake the lights through the shelves over 40 times!
The Solution
I opted for RGBIC strip lights, which offered the flexibility and brightness I needed. The installation coincided with running Ethernet cables, which meant I had to slide the shelves across the floor—no easy feat with hundreds of items on them. I used cardboard to make the process smoother.
Lessons Learned
- Planning is Key: Measure the space thoroughly to determine the exact length of lights needed. I ended up using one half-roll (32ft) on each side of the room.
- Patience Pays Off: Snaking the lights through the shelves was time-consuming, but taking my time ensured a clean, professional finish.
- Integration with Existing Systems: I fed all TV wires and plugs down the wall, ensuring a clutter-free setup.
The Outcome
Seeing the shelves light up for the first time was incredibly satisfying. The RGBIC strips not only brighten the space but also add a dynamic element that enhances the gaming atmosphere. I can now take high-quality photos and videos without worrying about dark spots.
If you’re considering a similar project, don’t be intimidated by the challenges. With careful planning and a bit of creativity, you can transform your space into a functional and stylish haven. Happy DIY-ing! ![]()
