Getting Started with Home Assistant: A Dashboard Customization Journey

Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of Home Assistant for about two weeks now, and I must say, it’s been an incredible journey. Setting up my first dashboard has been both rewarding and a bit challenging, especially when it comes to customizing the visual elements. I wanted to share my experience and ask for a bit of guidance from the community.

One feature I’m really excited about is monitoring my energy consumption. I’ve built a dashboard that displays real-time data on my solar production and electricity import. However, I’ve noticed that the default color scheme for these metrics is blue and yellow, which doesn’t quite align with my vision for the dashboard. Ideally, I’d like to have the solar production displayed in green and the electricity import in red. This would make it easier for my family to quickly understand the data at a glance.

Here’s where I’m a bit stuck: I’m not entirely sure how to adjust the color settings. From what I’ve gathered so far, there are a few potential avenues—modifying the entity itself, tweaking the card configuration, or diving into the YAML code. I’m leaning towards the YAML approach since it offers more control, but I’m not entirely confident in my ability to implement it correctly just yet.

This experience has been a great learning opportunity, and I’m excited to continue exploring the customization options Home Assistant offers. I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully changed the color schemes of their dashboards or has tips on the best way to approach this. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other make the most out of our smart home setups!

Cheers,
Lutz
