Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun project I’ve been working on using Google and Alexa together. It’s been a bit of a journey, but the result is something pretty cool!
The Background
I’ve always been a fan of both Google and Amazon’s smart speaker ecosystems. I have an Echo Show near my front door, which is great for displaying my Ring doorbell camera. However, I was looking for a way to make it even more seamless. Specifically, I wanted the Echo Show to automatically display the camera feed whenever someone rings the doorbell, without needing to manually say the command.
The Solution
After some research and experimentation, I found a way to make Google and Alexa work together in a fun and useful way. Here’s how I did it:
- Alexa Routine: I set up a routine in the Alexa app that triggers a virtual switch in Hubitat whenever the doorbell rings. This virtual switch acts as a signal for the next step.
- Google Assistant Integration: When the virtual switch is activated, it sends a text-to-speech command to a Google Mini that’s connected to the same network. This command tells Alexa to display the front door camera feed.
The Result
Now, whenever someone rings the doorbell, the Echo Show automatically switches to the camera view. It’s a small but super convenient feature that adds a nice touch to my smart home setup!
Why I Love It
This project has been a great way to combine two powerful ecosystems. It’s also been a fun learning experience, as I had to figure out how to make the two systems communicate effectively. Plus, it’s added an extra layer of convenience to my daily routine.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
- Compatibility: Ensuring that both devices were on the same network and properly configured was crucial.
- Automation Complexity: Setting up the virtual switch and ensuring the commands were correctly routed took some trial and error.
- Consistency: Testing the setup multiple times to make sure it worked reliably was important.
Final Thoughts
It’s amazing how much you can do by combining different smart home platforms. This project has inspired me to look for more ways to integrate Google and Alexa in my home. If you’re looking for a fun automation project, I’d highly recommend giving this a try!
