Starting my journey with smart lighting has been an exciting adventure, and Govee has been a significant part of that. I recently purchased a set of Govee outdoor lights, and while the experience hasn’t been without its bumps, I’ve learned a lot along the way. Here’s what I’ve discovered and some tips that might help others who are exploring Govee’s offerings!
Initially, I was thrilled with the idea of having lights with built-in motion sensors. After all, security is a top priority, and the idea of lights that activate automatically when movement is detected seemed perfect. However, I quickly realized that the distributed gateway feature, which is supposed to extend the range of the devices, was a bit of a letdown. My gateway is already maxed out at 10 connections, and adding these lights meant I’d have to remove some existing devices to make room. That wasn’t ideal, especially since I use those devices daily.
After some research and experimentation, I found that connecting the Govee devices via Matter worked, but it came with its own set of challenges. The biggest issue was that connecting via Matter meant I couldn’t use the Govee app simultaneously. It was a trade-off I wasn’t willing to make, especially since I rely on the app for customization and scheduling.
Ultimately, I decided to return the lights, but not without learning some valuable lessons. For anyone considering Govee’s outdoor lights, I’d recommend checking your gateway’s capacity first. If you’re already near the limit, it might be worth exploring other brands that offer similar features without the connection limitations.
Another thing I learned is the importance of planning. I had grand plans to install these lights permanently, but the connectivity issues made that impossible. If I were to try again, I’d look for a solution that allows for both app control and Matter integration without compromising functionality.
On a positive note, I’ve heard great things about Govee’s customer support, and while I didn’t need to use it in this particular case, it’s reassuring to know they’re there if issues arise. I’m still excited about the potential of smart lighting and plan to explore other options in the future.
If anyone has tips or experiences to share about Govee or other smart lighting brands, I’d love to hear them! Happy smart lighting adventures to all!
