Govee Smart Switch: A Lifesaver for Rural Connectivity

I’ve been a huge fan of Govee products ever since I discovered their sleek design and vibrant RGB capabilities. However, living in a rural area with limited internet connectivity has always been a hurdle for me. I rely heavily on my phone’s mobile hotspot, which isn’t always reliable, but it’s the only option available. This is why I was so excited to try out the Govee Smart Switch Distributed Gateway—hoping it would solve my connectivity issues once and for all.

The installation process was straightforward, and the Govee app recognized the Smart Switches immediately. However, my excitement quickly turned to frustration when I realized that even these supposedly internet-independent devices wouldn’t function without an active internet connection. This was a major letdown, especially since I had high hopes for them to serve as a reliable backup system.

After some research and experimentation, I discovered a workaround that involves setting up a local network using a Raspberry Pi. This setup allows me to control my Govee devices through a local app, bypassing the need for an internet connection. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a significant improvement over the Bluetooth-only functionality.

I’d like to commend Govee for their innovative approach to smart lighting, but I also hope they’ll consider adding more robust local control features in future iterations. For now, I’m grateful for the Smart Switches and the creative solutions they’ve inspired me to explore. If anyone has tips or tricks for optimizing Govee devices in areas with spotty internet, I’d love to hear them!
