I recently installed the HB Fan & Light (F&L) controller, and I must say, it was a rewarding experience despite a few hurdles along the way. Let me share my journey and some tips that might help others facing similar challenges.
Installation Process
I started by importing the device handlers, which went smoothly. However, installing the controller proved to be a bit tricky. The fan I was working with was an older model, and finding a suitable spot for the controller module was challenging. After some creative problem-solving, I opted to zip tie the module to the mount right at the ceiling. This worked perfectly!
Overcoming Obstacles
One unexpected issue was the fan’s mounting setup. It used a flat plate to hang the fan, which didn’t allow the wires to pass through. To resolve this, I used a radiator clamp to secure the fan in place. This small adjustment made a big difference in the overall installation.
Pairing and Testing
Using the SmartThings (ST) app, I added the device and powered it on. The pairing process was seamless, and I was thrilled to see the fan and lights working perfectly with the ST app, remote, and ActionTiles. However, I noticed that dimming the lights wasn’t possible. While this feature wasn’t available in the older fan model either, it’s something I hope to see in future updates.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the installation was a success, and the HB F&L controller has enhanced my home automation setup. Kudos to KOF for developing such a reliable product and providing the necessary handlers. If you’re considering this controller, don’t let initial challenges deter you—problem-solving is all part of the fun!
