Home Assistant Weather Station Setup Tips

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share my recent project of setting up a low-cost weather station for my cottage. After doing some research, I found that the Accurite weather station works well with Home Assistant through WeeWX, but I was looking for something more affordable—around $100 CAD. I stumbled upon the Davis Vantage Vue, which seems to be a great option for the price.

I wanted to connect it to Home Assistant, so I decided to try using MQTT as the middleware. I followed some guides online and managed to get the weather data streaming into my dashboard. It’s amazing to see real-time temperature and humidity updates from my backyard!

One thing I struggled with was the initial configuration. I kept getting errors about the MQTT broker not responding. After some troubleshooting, I realized I had to adjust the firewall settings on my Raspberry Pi to allow MQTT traffic. Once that was sorted, everything worked like a charm!

For anyone else looking to set this up, I highly recommend checking out the Home Assistant documentation on weather integration. It’s incredibly detailed, and the community support is fantastic. I also found some awesome automations online that notify me when extreme weather conditions are detected—super handy for planning outdoor activities!

I’d love to hear if anyone else has experience with weather stations and Home Assistant. What brands or setups have worked well for you? Let’s keep the discussion going! :sun_with_face:
