Hey everyone! I’m thrilled to share my recent journey into the world of Homey and smart home automation. After spending weeks researching and setting up my system, I wanted to jot down some of my experiences and tips for anyone else who’s just starting out. ![]()
Getting Started with Homey
I decided to go with Homey after hearing great things about its flexibility and integration capabilities. My setup includes a mix of Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi devices, and I must say, the initial pairing process was surprisingly smooth. I especially love how Homey handles different protocols without needing separate bridges for each one. ![]()
Device Setup Highlights
One of the first devices I set up was the TP-Link Tapo light switch (S505) using Matter. While the setup seemed straightforward, I encountered a hiccup during the final stages. The device timed out during the ‘Adding Matter device to Homey’ phase. After some research, I found that resetting both the Homey and the switch resolved the issue. Now, it works like a charm! ![]()
I also installed some Sengled RGBW bulbs, which have been a hit. However, I noticed that one bulb occasionally flickers when receiving commands. I’m still troubleshooting this, but the support community has been incredibly helpful. If anyone has similar issues, feel free to reach out! ![]()
Tips for New Users
- Start Small: Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many devices at once. Begin with a few key items like lights or a thermostat and gradually expand your setup.
- Invest in Quality Repeater: If you’re experiencing connectivity issues, especially with Zigbee devices, consider adding a reliable repeater. It can make a world of difference in signal strength and reliability.
- Explore the Flow Editor: Homey’s Flow editor is incredibly intuitive. Spend some time experimenting with different triggers and actions to create personalized automations. I’ve set up a few flows that turn on lights when I arrive home or adjust the thermostat based on the time of day.
- Join the Community: The Homey community is vibrant and supportive. If you run into any issues, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Someone is always willing to lend a hand!

Looking Ahead
I’m excited to dive deeper into Homey’s capabilities. My next project is setting up a smart irrigation system using Zigbee-connected valves. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes! ![]()
If anyone has tips or experiences to share, especially regarding Matter devices or troubleshooting common issues, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s continue to grow and learn together! ![]()
