After spending quite some time exploring the integration between my Honeywell T6 Z-Wave thermostat and Google Home, I thought it would be helpful to share my journey and some tips for anyone else looking to make the switch. Spoiler alert: It’s totally doable, but there are a few bumps to watch out for!
For those of you who might be in the same boat, I was previously using SmartThings and a Nest thermostat, which worked seamlessly. Transitioning to the Honeywell system has been a bit of a learning curve, especially when it comes to getting everything to sync up with Google. Initially, I was pretty frustrated when I couldn’t get the temperature changes to register through Google Assistant. It’s one of those moments where you’re like, “Wait, did I just do that right?” But hey, that’s part of the fun, right?
After some digging and a lot of trial and error, here’s what I figured out:
- Check Your Firmware: Make sure your Honeywell thermostat is running the latest firmware. Sometimes, those pesky bugs are just waiting for an update to go away.
- Integration Settings: If you’re using the Honeywell Advanced Thermostat driver, double-check your integration settings in Google Home. It’s easy to overlook a small tweak that could make all the difference.
- Automation Tools: I’ve found that setting up some basic automations in Home Assistant has been a lifesaver. For example, having the thermostat adjust based on my location or schedule takes a lot of the manual work out of the equation.
One thing I’ve really appreciated about the Honeywell system is how customizable it is. Whether you’re into smart scheduling or just want to keep things simple, there’s something here for everyone. Plus, the ability to monitor everything through Google Home is a huge plus for me.
If you’re considering making the switch, my advice is to take it one step at a time. Start with the basics and gradually add in more complex automations as you get comfortable. And don’t hesitate to reach out to the community if you run into any roadblocks—there’s a ton of helpful folks out there who are more than happy to lend a hand!
Happy tinkering, everyone! ![]()
