How do you think smart locks will evolve over the next 7 years?

What major changes do you expect in terms of security, everyday usability, and integration with phones, wearables, or smart homes?
Do you think biometrics will fully replace keys and PIN codes, or will traditional access methods still matter?

Biometrics have the natural disadvantage that it rely on something we perceive as constant (as fingerprint or face mapping) but it can change.

For example, if you play a string instrument, or work in construction, your fingerprint may change.

Or if you get into a bar fight, your face may change.

And many security companies know this (including Apple), that’s why they require a code or another way to authenticate. Basically it’s why your iPhone will require to enter the code on the lock screen - so you won’t forget it.

I think it’s like with the robot vacuums market - we’re near the wall, we’re just fighting about what’s most convenient to use or install, and there’s not much to improve. Having said that, I’m still hyped and impressed with the UWB, because it takes many factors (like your iPhone knowing you showed it your face a few minutes ago) to identify the user.

I believe that regardless of any future tech developments that improve smart locks over time. A mechanical bypass will always be required for complete reliability. Let’s face it… even the most stable tech can (and does) fail! While many brands have found clever ways to charge a dead battery to bring a smart lock back to life. This isn’t the only way a smart lock can fail. In the event it does fail… you’ll be so very glad you have a bypass key! Although it won’t do you much good if you can’t find said key after years of never needing it. I keep a copy in the glovebox of my car… I also keep the key code (cuts) in a file on my phone. So if I can’t get the physical key… I could have one produced by a locksmith with that information. These are just my thoughts… and I hope smart locks keep a bypass key as an option for all future builds!

UWB Definitely feel like the more likely future. While biometrics (fingerprint in this case) is super fast, I find it much more convenient to use my Apple Watch to unlock. This becomes especially true for those of us that live in cold temperatures.
