I got tired of getting into bed at the end of the day and then remembering, “Heck! I forgot to check the doors and windows to see if they’re closed!”, and having to go downstairs to look. (We have a number of windows accessible from the ground, and we often keep them open, weather permitting.) So I installed Aqara window/door sensors on the “sensitively located” windows and doors, and developed a simple automation using a series of IF-THEN statements polling the status of all the sensors: ‘are any sensors open (i.e., are any windows or doors open)? ’ If so, THEN turn the light on the M1S hub BLUE. IF all the sensors are closed (all the windows and doors are closed) THEN turn the light on the M1S ORANGE. This simple visual cue tells me, at any time, day or night (but especially before I head up the stairs at night to go to bed!) if any of the doors or windows “of concern” are open and need to be closed. I’m not a programmer and there may be a more elegant way of doing this, but it’s been working perfectly for me for a couple of years now.
@abammerman That’s such a clever and practical way to leverage the Aqara Hub M1S Gen2! Using its RGB light as a visual indicator for door/window status is a great solution to a common daily hassle—no more late-night trips downstairs to double-check!
It’s awesome to see how you’ve turned the hub’s built-in RGB Light and Illumination Sensor into a personalized alert system. This kind of real-world application really shows the flexibility of Aqara devices. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and the step-by-step logic behind your automation—other users with similar needs will definitely find this helpful!
If you ever tweak the setup further or discover other handy uses for the hub’s features, feel free to share more details here. Your creativity is inspiring! ![]()
