I’ve been working on a solution for my home automation setup, and I wanted to share my journey and findings with the community. Here’s the scenario: I have a large home, and I wanted to create a smooth transition from being awake to going to bed. I set up two scenes: one called Prepare for Sleep and another called Good Night. Prepare for Sleep turns on lights in the living room and master bedroom, while Good Night turns off all lights except the outside ones and arms the security system. It works perfectly, but I wanted to refine it further.
My goal was for lights 2, 3, and 4 to turn off automatically after about two minutes, giving me just enough time to get to bed while leaving light 1 on for a bit longer. Initially, I thought of creating another scene with a delay, but I wasn’t sure how to trigger it properly. After some research, I found that using a virtual switch and adding a delay in the scene settings was the way to go. It’s a simple yet effective solution!
If you’re looking to automate your lights for a seamless night routine, here’s how I did it:
- Create a Virtual Switch: Use a virtual switch as a trigger for your automation. This allows you to activate it via voice commands or other triggers.
- Set Up the Scene: In your scene settings, include the lights you want to turn off after a delay. Add a delay action (I used two minutes) to match the time it takes to get to bed.
- Test and Adjust: Start with a shorter delay and adjust as needed. This ensures you don’t end up in the dark before you’re ready!
This setup has made my evenings much more relaxing. I’d love to hear if anyone has a different approach or if there are more advanced techniques to achieve this. Happy automating!
