Morning routines can be a bit chaotic, especially when you’re trying to juggle multiple tasks. I recently decided to streamline my mornings using my smart home setup, and I thought I’d share my journey and tips with you all!
The Challenge:
I wanted my bedroom lights to turn on automatically when I open my bedroom door in the morning. Sounds simple, right? But I also wanted the living room lights to come on as I move from my bedroom to the bathroom. I’ve got door sensors on both the bedroom and bathroom doors, and a motion sensor on the stairs. The motion sensor works perfectly for the living room when I come upstairs, but the door sensors were a bit tricky.
What I Tried:
I initially set up the door sensors in their own zones and added them to the Second Floor Zone. This worked to some extent, but it also meant that the bathroom motion sensor kept the living room lights on all the time. I tried using Virtual Devices to create a virtual door, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it trigger the living room zone properly. It was frustrating because the concept seemed so simple!
The Solution:
After some research and trial and error, I realized that the key was to ensure that the door sensors could activate the living room zone without relying on the motion sensor in the bathroom. I ended up creating a custom automation rule that checks if either the bedroom or bathroom door is opened and then triggers the living room lights. It took a bit of tweaking, but it finally worked!
Tips for Others:
- Start Simple: Begin with one sensor and one action before adding more complexity.
- Use Zones Effectively: Zones can be your best friend when automating multiple areas.
- Test and Adjust: Don’t be afraid to tweak your settings. What works for one person might not work for you.
Final Thoughts:**
It’s amazing how a little automation can make mornings less stressful. I now enjoy a seamless transition from my bedroom to the living room, with lights adjusting automatically. If you’re looking to automate your mornings, start small and build up. The satisfaction of a well-oiled smart home routine is worth it!
