How to Connect Your Google/Nest Cameras After Changing Your Router

Hey everyone, I recently had an interesting experience that I thought I’d share with you. I decided to upgrade my Xfinity gateway router, thinking it would give me a more stable and faster connection. Little did I know, this simple upgrade would lead to a bit of a tech adventure!

After setting up the new router, I noticed something was off—my Google and Nest cameras were showing as offline. At first, I was a bit puzzled. I mean, the router was working fine for everything else, so why wouldn’t it connect to my cameras? I started doing some research and reached out to the community for help.

It turns out, the issue was a bit more straightforward than I expected. The new router had different settings for device connections, and my cameras weren’t automatically reconnecting. I learned that sometimes, after a router change, devices need a little nudge to reconnect properly.

Here’s what I did to fix it:

  1. Check Network Settings: I made sure the new router was on the same network name and password as the old one. This wasn’t necessary, but it was a good starting point.

  2. Restart the Cameras: I physically unplugged each camera and let them sit for about 30 seconds before plugging them back in. This reset the connection and forced them to look for the network again.

  3. Use the Google Home App: I opened the Google Home app and went to the devices section. There, I found an option to ‘Add Device’ and followed the prompts to reconnect each camera manually. The app walked me through the process, and it was surprisingly smooth.

  4. Check for Firmware Updates: Just to be thorough, I checked if there were any firmware updates for the cameras. Updating them ensured they were compatible with the new router.

After going through these steps, my cameras were back online, and everything was working as expected. It was a bit of a hassle, but it taught me a valuable lesson about how devices interact with routers, especially after upgrades.

If you’re ever in a similar situation, I hope this helps! It’s all about patience and methodically checking each step. Happy smart home tinkering everyone!
