How to Set Up a Smart Lighting Scene with IFTTT

Hey everyone, I’m excited to share my journey setting up a smart lighting scene using IFTTT. I’ve always wanted to create a seamless experience where my lights adjust automatically based on my activities, and I think I’ve nailed it! :star2:

The Goal:
I wanted my living room lights to dim to a cozy level when I start watching a movie on my smart TV. If I pause the movie, I’d love the lights to brighten slightly so I can see what I’m doing without fully interrupting the mood. And of course, when I resume the movie, the lights should dim again. Sounds simple, but getting everything to work smoothly took some tweaking!

The Setup:

  • Smart Lights: I’m using Philips Hue bulbs, which are known for their reliability and integration with smart home systems.
  • Smart TV: A Samsung QLED TV with built-in SmartThings support.
  • IFTTT Applets: To bridge the gap between my TV and lights.

The Process:

  1. Identify Triggers: The key here was figuring out how to detect when I start or pause a movie. IFTTT has a ‘WatchTv’ trigger in the SmartThings channel that detects when the TV is on and in a specific input mode (like HDMI 1 where my streaming device is connected). Perfect!
  2. Create Applets:
    • Dim Lights on Start: When the TV turns on and the correct input is selected, the Hue bulbs dim to 30% brightness.
    • Brighten on Pause: When the TV is paused, the lights increase to 60% brightness.
    • Dim Again on Resume: When the TV resumes, the lights go back to 30%.
  3. Testing: This part was crucial. I tested each scenario multiple times to ensure there were no delays or unexpected behaviors. It’s all about finding the right balance between automation and real-time adjustments.

The Outcome:
It works like magic! Now, every time I sit down to watch a movie, the lights automatically adjust to create the perfect ambiance. And when I need to grab a snack or check the time, the lights brighten just enough without ruining the mood. It’s these small conveniences that make smart home technology truly shine.

Tips for Others:

  • Start Simple: Begin with one action, like dimming the lights when you turn on the TV, and gradually add more complex scenarios.
  • Use Consistent Naming: Make sure your devices and triggers have clear, consistent names to avoid confusion.
  • Be Patient: Automation can be finicky, but with some trial and error, you’ll get it right!

I’d love to hear how others have set up their smart lighting scenes or any tips you have for improving mine. Let’s keep the brainstorming going! :bulb::sparkles:
