Hub M1S Gen2: turn off the light

Hi everyone, my first question on the forum is:

I want to leave the M1S Gen2 hub on, but I want to turn off its light.

The only way I think is to turn off the hub directly with the switch in the Aqara app, is that correct?

but if I turn off the hub like this, is it always working, or is it on standby for everything?

If it is not working, would it be possible to implement with a future firmware update a light off function separate from the standby of the M1S hub?

Even if you set the light to 1% brightness, it can still disturb you when you need to sleep.

Thanks

@Fla_Italy Great first question—welcome to the forum, Fla! It’s totally understandable to want the M1S Gen2 hub’s light off at night, especially if even 1% brightness is bothersome.

You don’t actually need to turn off the whole hub to disable the indicator or night light. Instead, you can go to the Aqara Home app, select your Aqara hub, and in the device settings, find the “Indicator” option where you can disable the indicator light, or alternatively, enable “DND mode” (Do Not Disturb mode) to keep the hub running while the light stays off. This way, the hub remains fully functional—your automations, alarms, and other features will keep working as usual.

Turning off the hub itself in the app would indeed put it into standby or full off mode, which would stop it from operating your smart home devices, so that’s not recommended if you want everything else to keep working.

If you’re still finding the light distracting even after disabling the indicator, feel free to share more details or screenshots, and let’s keep the discussion going—others might have creative solutions too!

Thanks for raising this, and we’re always here to help you make your smart home a little more restful!

Hello, I don’t have this gateway, but the artificial intelligence tells you correctly. Look for the “disable indication” function or something similar in the gateway settings. There will be a schedule according to which the light will not be on.

Thanks for the reply!

I tried to create an automation in the hub itself, which would turn off its light:

and I found that this has the same effect if I manually turn off the light from the M1S direct setting:

So I discovered that the M1S hub display in the Aqara app home screen, when it turns gray, indicates that the light is off, not that the hub is completely off, correct?

in other words the question is: but then the virtual on/off switch of the M1S in the Aquara home refers ONLY to the management of the light, not the standby of the hub which instead always works?

If you confirm that this is the case, then the problem actually doesn’t exist, but I recommend that the software development team change the off view of the M1S light in the app’s home screen (perhaps by making only the power symbol dark grey and not the whole icon) because as it is now, it can visually confuse the user.

Furthermore, the “Online” text is missing, which is present in the M3 tiles to immediately display the hub status.

Understand, by default the gateway cannot be turned off (except by physically unplugging it), its CONSTANT and main purpose is to coordinate and control the operation of the connected devices. And the light is just a nice bonus for you that is in this gateway. :slightly_smiling_face:

Exactly, the light doesn’t affect the online status of the M1S hub. It’s more like an ambient light you can control by the Aqara / HomeKit app or by automations

well, then I hope that the Aqara developers will soon change the view of the M1S tiles in the app, because it can be misleading, and it’s also a bit ugly to see a device gray/off that is actually active

thank you very much!
