Hub M3 w/ HA Integration Unique Automations

I have an M3 hub and a couple M2’s. I have Homekit and Home Assistant.

I was hoping for some good idea’s to integrate the 3 with some unique automations.

Something beyond I walk into the room and the lights dim and TV turns on.

Post inspiration here.

Thanks!

@rmull3dm Hi Ryan,

Thanks for reaching out with your enthusiasm for creating unique automations using the M3 hub, M2 hubs, HomeKit, and Home Assistant! Integrating these platforms opens up a world of possibilities for smart home automation.

While the reference information doesn’t provide specific automation ideas, here are a few suggestions to inspire your creativity:

  1. Energy Management Automation:

    • Use sensors to monitor energy usage and automate devices to operate when energy consumption is low, optimizing efficiency. For instance, schedule high-energy devices, like dishwashers or washing machines, to run during off-peak hours to save on energy costs.
  2. Security Enhancements:

    • Create an automation where upon detecting unexpected motion when the house is in ‘Away’ mode, the system sends an alert to your phone, turns on all lights, and starts recording footage with connected cameras.
  3. Weather-Based Automation:

    • Integrate weather data to adjust your home’s environment. For example, if rain is detected, automatically close windows or if the temperature drops, increase the heating.
  4. Dynamic Lighting Scenes:

    • Set up dynamic lighting scenes that change throughout the day, mimicking natural sunlight indoors or transitioning through different ambiances for morning, afternoon, and evening.
  5. Health and Wellness:

    • Automate the environment for better sleep quality by dimming lights, adjusting the thermostat, and playing calming sounds when bedtime is detected.

These ideas leverage the strengths of both HomeKit and Home Assistant, allowing you to create a smart home experience that is personalized and efficient. Feel free to share your creations or ask for further advice from the community—everyone would love to hear more about your setup!

Best wishes on your automation journey!

Warm regards,

Some people like to create HA dashboards specific to the room. Have you thought about serving up a custom dashboard for each room you are in to control the smart devices in that room?

Question is a bit general so not sure what to say. I would just think about how life is inside the house - what are your pain points? Can it be automated? What would be convenient to have happen. So that’s it really - what problems need to be solved and what would be convenient to have happen.

Well, I set mine with the AC. Now I can set automations for when it’s too hot outside and the house is occupied (devices are home) and getting warm inside…THEN, m3 sends the command to cool the house with the AC via IR, then, door sensors will stop the AC if left open for long…if the house is empty goes to eco mode.

@P4ck0 That’s a fantastic setup you’ve created with the M3 hub and your AC! By utilizing the M3’s 360° IR blaster capabilities, you can effectively manage your home’s climate, ensuring comfort while optimizing energy use. Integrating door sensors to halt the AC when left open is a smart way to prevent energy waste. Additionally, transitioning to eco mode when the house is unoccupied is a great approach to maintain efficiency. Your automation not only enhances comfort but also contributes to energy conservation. Thanks for sharing this clever automation with the community—it’s sure to inspire others to explore similar setups! Keep up the great work, and feel free to share more of your innovative ideas.
