I’ve been exploring Hubitat after years of using Homeseer, and I’m thrilled with its capabilities. One feature I was particularly excited about was replicating a complex automation I had in Homeseer for my basement lighting. Let me share my journey and success with you!
The Challenge:
My basement is completely below grade with no windows, so it’s always dark. I wanted the lights to stay on as long as there was motion but turn off automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity. In Homeseer, this involved multiple motion sensors resetting a timer each time motion was detected. I wondered if Hubitat could handle this seamlessly.
The Solution:
After some research and experimentation, I found that Hubitat’s rule engine made this automation straightforward. I connected four motion sensors to Hubitat and set up a rule where any motion trigger resets a 10-minute timer. If motion is detected within those 10 minutes, the timer simply restarts. Once the timer completes without further motion, the lights turn off automatically.
The Outcome:
It works perfectly! The basement lights now stay on only when needed, saving energy without sacrificing convenience. This setup has been a game-changer for me, and I’m confident Hubitat can handle even more complex automations in the future.
