I’ve recently completed setting up my Ikea TRÅDFRI system, and I wanted to share my experience and some tips for anyone looking to do the same. This guide is based on my personal journey, so feel free to adapt it to your needs!
Gear Overview
- 3x 980lm Multicolor Bulbs: These provide excellent brightness and color accuracy.
- 5-Button Remote: A handy addition for manual control.
- Google Home: For voice integration.
- SmartThings Hub: I’m using a SmartThings Link plugged into an NVidia Shield.
- Android Phone: For app-based control.
Setup Process
- Install Bulbs: This was straightforward—just screw them in!
- Pairing: I followed the standard on/off sequence 6 times, and it worked perfectly.
- SmartThings App: I installed the app and set up my Shield for Android TV integration.
- Device Handler: I used Edvald Eysteinsson’s Bulb Handler and Rich Mercer’s 5-button Remote handler. The remote pairing was a bit tricky, but holding the remote near the hub and bulbs during setup made it work.
- Integration: Connecting to Google Home was seamless. The bulbs and remote are now fully functional!
Tips
- Battery Check: The remote’s battery status is visible, but I’m still exploring its full functionality.
- Placement: When adding bulbs, hold them close to the hub (2cm away) to ensure detection.
- Automation: I’m planning to use the remote to control multiple bulbs with a single press. Stay tuned for an update!
This setup has transformed my room into a smart, customizable space. I’m excited to explore more features and share my progress here. Happy smart home building! ![]()
