Improving Motion Detection with Shelly Motion

I’ve been using the Shelly Motion sensor in my hallway for a while now, and while it’s been a great addition to my smart home setup, I’ve noticed that the motion detection isn’t as effective as I’d like it to be. The sensor is supposed to detect movement up to 7 meters away, but in practice, it only seems to pick me up when I’m about a meter away from it. This has led to some frustrating moments where I’ve had to wave my arms around to get the lights to turn on!

I’ve tried tweaking the sensitivity settings and adjusting the placement of the sensor, but nothing seems to make a significant difference. I’ve read online that others have had similar issues, and I’m curious to know if there’s a better way to optimize the sensor’s performance. Maybe there’s a specific angle or height that works better, or perhaps there’s a firmware update that improves the detection range.

In the meantime, I’ve resorted to using a combination of the Shelly Motion and a traditional wall switch for the hallway lights. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it ensures that I always have light when I need it. I’d love to hear if anyone else has found a way to improve the motion detection range of their Shelly Motion sensor. Maybe there’s a trick I’m missing!

Overall, I’m still impressed with the Shelly Motion’s versatility and integration with my smart home ecosystem. It’s just a shame that the motion detection isn’t as reliable as I’d hoped. I’m hopeful that with some experimentation and maybe a bit of community input, I can find a way to make it work better for my needs.
