Improving Smart Lighting Automation with Motion Sensors

I’ve recently started my journey into the world of smart home automation, and I must say, it’s been both exciting and a bit challenging. One of my main goals has been to set up a reliable system where motion sensors can trigger lights automatically, especially in areas like my workshop and garage. While I’ve managed to get the basics working, I’m encountering a few issues that I’d love to get some advice on.

So far, I’ve linked a motion sensor in my workshop to a smart plug controlling a floodlight. The setup works in terms of detecting motion, but I’m struggling with getting the light to turn off after a certain period. I’ve tried using both manual automations and the ‘Smart Lighting’ app, but the light remains on indefinitely, which isn’t ideal for energy efficiency or convenience.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • Linked the motion sensor and smart plug in the SmartThings app.
  • Created an automation to turn the light on when motion is detected.
  • Set up a ‘Smart Lighting’ app rule to turn the light off after 1 minute of inactivity.

Despite these efforts, the light doesn’t seem to turn off automatically. I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing in the setup or if there’s a better way to achieve this. Maybe adjusting the sensitivity settings or using a different app could help?

I’m also curious about best practices for motion sensor placement to ensure reliable detection without false triggers. Any tips or experiences others have had with similar setups would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and hopefully finding a solution to this automation puzzle. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other improve our smart home setups!
