Hey everyone! Just wanted to share a few super underrated tricks I’ve been using with my Aqara setup to cut down on my energy bills. I’m no tech genius, just a smart home hobbyist who got really into messing with automations after seeing a scary electricity bill last summer.
Here are a few of the coolest things that actually worked for me:
-
Aqara Motion Sensors + Lights = magic
I put motion sensors in my hallway and kitchen so lights only turn on when someone’s there. I used to leave those lights on all the time without thinking. Now, if there’s no motion for a few minutes, boom, lights off. Total game changer. -
Temperature Sensor + AC
This one saved me during the heat wave: I set up an automation with the Aqara temperature sensor near my upstairs AC unit. Basically, the AC only kicks in when the temp goes above 78°F and shuts off when it drops below 74°F. I still stay comfy, but without the AC running 24/7. -
Window/Door Sensor + AC logic
Put a door sensor on the patio door and paired it with the AC. If the door’s open for more than 30 seconds, the AC turns off. Saved my butt when my kids kept leaving it open “just for a sec”. -
Night mode combo
At night, I’ve got low-brightness lighting tied to motion so you’re not blasting lights when you get up to pee at 3am. Helps save energy and your eyes.
All of this is running via HomeKit + the Aqara Hub M2. Took me a bit of fiddling, but once I got it right, it’s been smooth sailing.
Would love to hear what clever hacks you all are doing too. Anyone figured out a smart way to manage heating during winter with Aqara gear? Or using it with solar panels maybe?
Let’s swap ideas — I’m all ears!
