Integrating Existing Security Systems with Smart Home Tech

Hello everyone, I’m really excited to share my journey and experiences with integrating my existing security systems into my smart home setup. I’ve been exploring how to connect my traditional wired alarm system with modern smart home devices, and it’s been quite a learning curve!

I currently have a DSC PC5010 panel along with several sensors and a siren. I’ve been looking into using the Qolsys IQ panel to enhance my security setup, but I’m not entirely sure how compatible everything will be. I’ve reached out to some forums and experts, and it seems like it’s possible, but there are a few things I need to check before diving in.

One thing I’m particularly curious about is whether I need any permits from my town for this kind of work. I’m not sure if modifying an existing alarm system falls under any local regulations, so I’d love to hear if anyone here has experience with that.

On another note, I’ve also been experimenting with adding more smart devices around my home. I recently picked up a Vera 3 hub to complement my Simon XT system. It’s been a great addition, but I’m still figuring out how to get everything working seamlessly together. For instance, I’d love to set up some advanced automation rules, like turning on lights when motion is detected after dark. I’m hoping the Vera 3 can handle that logic without any hiccups.

I’d also like to hear from anyone who’s successfully integrated older systems with newer smart home tech. What were your challenges, and how did you overcome them? Any tips or resources would be incredibly helpful!

Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other navigate this exciting world of smart home integration. Happy tinkering everyone! :rocket:
