Integrating Google and Alexa for Seamless Automation

I wanted to share an exciting project I recently completed with the help of this forum. I’ve managed to get Google and Alexa devices to work together seamlessly, creating a fun and efficient automation setup. Here’s how it all came together!

The Goal

I have an Echo Show near my front door, which is great for displaying my Ring doorbell cam. However, it requires saying, ‘Alexa, show front door’ to activate. I wanted this to happen automatically whenever someone rings the doorbell. To achieve this, I combined Google and Alexa devices in a creative way.

The Setup

  1. Alexa Routine: I created a routine in the Alexa app that triggers a virtual switch in Hubitat whenever the doorbell rings. This switch acts as a signal for the next step.
  2. Google Home Integration: When the virtual switch is activated, it sends a text-to-speech command to a Google Mini located behind the Echo Show. The Google Mini then says, ‘Alexa, show front door,’ which automatically displays the Ring cam on the Echo Show.

The Outcome

Now, whenever someone rings the doorbell, the Echo Show automatically displays the Ring cam without any manual intervention. This integration not only enhances security but also adds a touch of convenience to my smart home setup.

Why This Matters

This project highlights the potential of combining different smart ecosystems to create powerful automations. It shows that even though Google and Alexa are competitors, they can coexist and complement each other beautifully.

I’d love to hear how others have integrated multiple ecosystems in their homes. Have you found creative ways to make different platforms work together? Let’s share our experiences and inspire each other to push the boundaries of smart home automation!

Happy automating! :rocket:
