Integrating Google Maps Timeline with OpenHAB for Location Tracking

Hey everyone! I recently had an interesting experience that made me think about how we can integrate more of our daily tools into our smart home setups. Let me share a quick story and then pose a question to the community.

Last night, I accidentally left my phone at a restaurant. It was a bit of a panic at first because I couldn’t remember where I had placed it. However, I remembered that Google Maps Timeline tracks the locations of my devices. I was able to confirm through the Timeline feature that my phone was indeed at the restaurant until the battery died around 4 AM. This was incredibly helpful!

Now, thinking about how this could be integrated into my OpenHAB setup, I wonder if there’s a way to pull this Timeline data into OpenHAB. I’ve read that there’s no official API for Google Maps Timeline, but you can download the data in JSON format by logging into your account. I’m still getting the hang of working with JSON and Java, but I’m curious if anyone has successfully integrated this data into OpenHAB. Maybe we could display the current location or the last few hours of movement on a map within OpenHAB?

On a related note, I’ve also been thinking about how we manage our smart home devices and their data. It would be fantastic if there were a dedicated section or forum for discussing and sharing bindings or integrations like this. I’m sure many of us are exploring innovative ways to connect different services and devices, and having a space to collaborate on such projects would be invaluable.

If anyone has experience or insights on integrating Google Maps Timeline data into OpenHAB, or if you’ve thought about creating a more centralized resource for bindings and integrations, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Let’s brainstorm together and see what we can come up with.

Cheers,
