I recently started my journey into the world of smart home automation, and I must say, it’s been both exciting and a bit challenging. My main goal has been to integrate my Homematic IP thermostats into Home Assistant for more seamless control. Here’s a bit about my experience and some questions I have!
First off, I successfully set up my Homematic IP Access Point, and it’s been working like a charm. I’ve managed to create some time-based heating schedules using the app, but there’s this annoying message about too much data being sent through Homematic IP’s server. It’s a bit frustrating, especially since I’d love to add some presence detection to make things smarter. For instance, knowing when my kids are home or not would be super helpful!
I came across Better Thermostat and decided to give it a shot. I moved my thermostats and window contacts over to my CCU3, but unfortunately, Better Thermostat didn’t work out for me. I was really hoping to combine it with outdoor temperature sensors and a Shelly room thermometer. It would’ve been perfect for adjusting heating based on the weather and who’s home!
My main question is: how do you guys manage your Homematic IP thermostats in Home Assistant? I’d be happy with a simple time-based setup, but adding presence detection would be the cherry on top. My family has pretty varied schedules—my parents are home all day, I’m in and out during the week, and the kids have their own routines on weekends. It’d be great to automate the heating without needing to adjust it constantly.
I’m also wondering if there’s a way to integrate presence detection through my Fritzbox. It sounds like it could work, but I’m not entirely sure how to set it up. Before I revert everything back to the Access Point, I’d really appreciate any tips or advice you might have!
Thanks in advance for your help! I can’t wait to get this sorted and make my home a bit smarter. ![]()
