I recently decided to integrate my Ikea Tradfri wireless control outlet kit and two-button remote with SmartThings, and I’m thrilled to share my successful experience! After some research and experimentation, I managed to get everything working seamlessly, and I’d love to walk you through how I did it in case you’re considering a similar setup.
First, I purchased the Ikea Tradfri outlet and two-button remote, both of which are Zigbee compatible. The goal was to control my outlets and lights more efficiently, and I was excited to see how SmartThings could enhance this experience. The process started with pairing the outlet with the SmartThings hub. I followed the classic app’s instructions to add a new device, held the reset button on the outlet until it was detected, and voilà—it appeared in my device list!
Next, the challenge was pairing the two-button remote. I reset the remote by pressing the button next to the battery four times, which caused it to flash red four times. After reinstalling the battery and going through the same process in the SmartThings app, the remote was successfully paired. The app recognized it as a main device with two child devices for each button, which was a great feature!
To make the most of this setup, I created automations in the SmartThings app. I found that selecting the master device as the trigger and choosing either button 1 or 2, along with the action (pressed or held), allowed me to assign specific functions to each button. For example, pressing button 1 toggles my kitchen lights, while holding button 2 toggles the Ikea outlet. This customization made my home even smarter and more convenient!
One thing I noticed is that while the app crashes when trying to assign actions directly to the child devices, using automations in the Smart Lighting section worked perfectly. It’s a minor inconvenience, but the end result is worth it.
I’m really impressed with how affordable and versatile this setup is. The outlet handles a full 13A, and the remote’s textured buttons make it easy to use in the dark. Plus, the magnet base and 3M sticky pads mean it’s easy to place wherever I need it. I can’t recommend this setup enough—especially for those looking to enhance their home automation without breaking the bank!
