Integrating Insteon with Raspberry Pi: Worth the Effort?

Hey everyone, I’m diving into the world of home automation and I’m curious about integrating my Insteon 2412s PLM with my Raspberry Pi setup. I have a basic setup right now with a Raspberry Pi 3B+, a Nortek HUSBZB-1 (Z-Wave and ZigBee), a GoControl Z-Wave Thermostat, and some Osram Lightify RGBW LED strips. I’ve also got a few Insteon components sitting on the shelf, and I’m wondering if it’s worth adding another protocol to the mix.

I’m thinking about the pros and cons. On one hand, adding Insteon could give me more flexibility, especially since I don’t have a lot of devices invested yet. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the effort of connecting the PLM to the Pi is worth it. I’ve heard about voltage compatibility issues and I’m not entirely sure about the best way to connect them. Should I use a bidirectional level converter, or can I connect the PLM directly to the Pi’s GPIO pins? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I’m curious about the community’s experience with having multiple protocols in one setup. Does it complicate things, or is it manageable? I’m really looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences!

Cheers,
