Integrating iPhone Activity for Night Automation

Hey everyone, I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my smart home setup, and I came across an interesting challenge that I thought I’d share with you. I’ve been trying to integrate my iPhone’s activity data into my SmartThings setup to create a more seamless nighttime routine. The goal is to automate certain actions based on whether I’m actively using my phone or not, which could be a neat failsafe for those late-night moments when I might forget to turn off the lights manually.

Here’s the scenario: I often get into bed and spend a bit of time scrolling through my phone before I finally decide to wind down for the night. I don’t want my automation to kick in immediately when I get into bed because I still want the freedom to use my phone for a bit. However, if I forget to manually turn off the lights, it would be great if the system could do it for me based on my phone’s activity.

I’ve been researching whether SmartThings can detect phone activity beyond geolocation. From what I understand, geolocation is the primary method, but I’m curious if there’s a way to monitor activity like screen usage or app interactions. I’ve looked into some community forums and developer documentation, but it seems like geolocation is still the go-to method for most automations involving mobile devices.

I did come across some discussions about using third-party apps or services that can track phone activity and send notifications or triggers to SmartThings, but I’m not sure how reliable or secure those solutions are. I’m also concerned about privacy, so I want to make sure whatever solution I settle on respects my data.

For now, I’ve set up a basic automation using geolocation as a fallback. When I leave a certain geofence (like my home), the lights in my bedroom automatically turn off. It’s not the perfect solution I was hoping for, but it’s a start. I’m still holding out hope that there might be a more granular way to detect phone activity without relying solely on geolocation.

If anyone has experience with this or knows of a reliable method to integrate phone activity into SmartThings, I’d love to hear your thoughts! It would be amazing to find a balance between convenience and privacy in my smart home setup. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to any insights you might have!
