Integrating Multi-Brand Devices: My Journey and Tips

I’ve recently been diving into the world of smart home automation, and it’s been a fascinating journey! One of the challenges I’ve encountered is integrating devices from multiple brands, such as Philips Hue lights and other Zigbee-based devices. While OpenHAB makes this relatively straightforward, there are a few nuances that I’d like to share.

Initially, I was curious about whether I could use the Philips Hue remote to control devices from other brands like Xiaomi Yeelight or IKEA Tradfri. After some research, I discovered that while the protocol is the same, each vendor has its own way of handling commands. This means that universal control isn’t always possible, but there are workarounds.

One solution I found was using the openHAB Zigbee binding alongside vendor-specific bindings. This allows me to create custom automations that bridge the gap between different ecosystems. For example, I can now use my Busch & Jäger Zigbee switches to control both Hue lights and my Xiaomi devices, creating a seamless experience.

Another interesting project I’m working on involves monitoring my PV modules using a Shelly 1PM. By placing the Shelly between the PV module and the inverter, I can track energy production in real-time. This setup has been surprisingly stable, even during periods of low or no sunlight. I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has tips for optimizing such setups.

If you’re looking to integrate multiple brands into your smart home, my advice is to start with a solid understanding of your Zigbee network and to take advantage of the flexibility that openHAB offers. It’s also worth exploring community-driven solutions and scripts that can help you overcome compatibility hurdles.

I’d love to hear about your experiences with multi-brand integrations or any creative solutions you’ve implemented! Let’s continue to learn and grow together in this exciting space. :rocket:
