Hi everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation and wanted to share some of my experiences and tips. I’ve been working on integrating devices from multiple brands, which can sometimes be a bit of a puzzle, but it’s been a rewarding journey.
One of my recent projects involved connecting a Vivint smart panel with an ESP module to send MQTT messages to Home Assistant. It was a bit tricky at first, but I managed to set up an automation that alerts me when my alarm is armed or disarmed. The key was using a smart plug to control the ESP module’s power supply. I’d love to hear how others have managed similar setups!
Another challenge I faced was with a custom smart plug using ESPHome. It worked perfectly with Tasmota on both 110V and 220V, but with ESPHome, it only worked on 220V. After some troubleshooting, I realized the issue was with the GPIO configuration and power handling. I ended up adjusting the relay and button settings, and now it works flawlessly on both voltages. If anyone else is having similar issues, I’d be happy to share my config file!
I’ve also been exploring the best smart bulbs for my bedside lamps and living room. After some research, I settled on the Govee Strip Lights for their vibrant colors and smooth dimming. They integrate seamlessly with Google Assistant, which has been a huge plus. I’d love to hear everyone’s favorite bulbs and why they love them!
Lastly, I wanted to touch on the importance of device naming conventions. I’ve found that having a consistent naming system makes managing devices in Alexa and other platforms much easier. For example, prefixing devices by room (like ‘living_room_lights’) helps keep things organized. Does anyone have a naming system they swear by?
This community has been invaluable to me, and I’m excited to keep learning and sharing my experiences. Happy automating! ![]()
