Integrating Multiple Brands in OpenHAB: Tips and Challenges

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation with OpenHAB, and it’s been an exciting journey! One of the things I’m most passionate about is integrating devices from different brands to create a seamless ecosystem. I’ve recently been experimenting with combining Meross and LCN devices, and while it’s been mostly smooth sailing, there are a few hurdles I’ve encountered that I’d love to get some advice on.

My Setup

I’m currently using OpenHAB 3.3.0 on a Raspberry Pi, and I’ve got a mix of Meross smart plugs and LCN modules controlling various parts of my home. The idea is to have a unified system where I can manage everything from one interface. So far, I’ve been able to set up basic automations, but I’m looking to take it to the next level.

Challenges Faced

  1. Widget Integration with LCN: I came across a feature where I can trigger actions on LCN modules using widgets without writing rules. This sounds fantastic, but I’m not entirely sure how to implement it. For example, I’d love to have a button on my dashboard that triggers a specific key on my LCN module. I’ve tried looking into the documentation, but the part about getActions and actions.hitKey is still a bit unclear. Any tips or examples would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Meross LAN Integration: I’m really impressed with the Meross LAN integration, but I noticed that some devices, like the Presence Sensor MS600, aren’t listed as supported. I’m curious if there’s a workaround or if this is something that might be added in the future. It would be awesome to have all my Meross devices on the same LAN without relying on the cloud.

Success Story

On a positive note, I managed to set up a simple automation where my lights dim when I watch TV. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference in terms of comfort. I used a combination of MQTT and JSONPath transformations to achieve this, and it’s been working like a charm!

Looking Ahead

I’m really excited about the potential of OpenHAB and the community support behind it. I’m currently exploring ways to integrate my Shelly Dimmer 2 into the system, but I’ve noticed it occasionally drops offline. I’m wondering if this is a common issue or if there’s a tweak I can make to improve its reliability.

If anyone has experience with integrating multiple brands or has tips on troubleshooting device connectivity, I’d love to hear from you! Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other create smarter homes. :rocket:
