Integrating Multiple Brands with Home Assistant and SmartThings

I’ve been on a journey to integrate multiple smart home devices from different brands into my setup, and it’s been quite an adventure! :rocket: My primary system is Home Assistant (HASS) with a USB Z-Wave.Me device, which has been a game-changer for local control and automation. I’ve successfully migrated all my Z-Wave devices, and it’s smooth sailing so far. However, I still have a few Zigbee devices and presence sensors that I manage through MQTT.

One thing I’ve been curious about is the possibility of integrating SmartThings into this ecosystem. I’ve heard that it’s possible to join SmartThings to an existing Z-Wave network, but I’m wondering if anyone has successfully done this. Would the devices paired with HASS show up in SmartThings? I’m really excited about the idea of having the best of both worlds—local control with HASS and the convenience of internet-based control and WebCore programming.

Another area I’ve been exploring is the use of third-party cameras. I recently set up three Arlo Essential second-generation cameras, and they’ve been working beautifully indoors and outdoors. However, during the last winter, my outdoor cameras faced some issues, particularly with cold temperatures. One camera disconnected completely, and the other struggled to function. I’m curious if anyone has encountered similar issues and what steps they took to resolve them.

I’ve also been experimenting with custom scenes and automations. For instance, I’ve set up a system where my home alarm sends recurring notifications until I acknowledge them. It’s a small tweak, but it makes a big difference in ensuring I don’t miss any alerts.

The community resources and forums have been invaluable in troubleshooting these issues. I’ve found that diving into logs and configuration files, while intimidating at first, has become a routine part of my setup. Whether it’s tweaking MQTT settings for Sonoff Tasmota devices or exploring the capabilities of Zehnder ComfoConnect, every challenge presents an opportunity to learn something new.

To anyone embarking on a similar journey, my advice is to start small, document everything, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. The smart home ecosystem is vast, and there’s always something new to discover. Happy tinkering! :toolbox::sparkles:
