As a homeowner passionate about smart home automation, I’ve been on a journey to integrate various devices to create a seamless and secure environment. One of my recent projects involved setting up the Nuki Bridge and Shelly Motion Sensors to enhance my home security system. While this process was enlightening, it also presented some challenges that I’d like to share and discuss with the community.
The Setup: Nuki Bridge and Shelly Sensors
I decided to use the Nuki Bridge to manage my smart locks and integrate them with my existing Shelly sensors. The goal was to create a system where motion detected by the Shelly sensors would trigger specific actions, such as unlocking the door or turning on lights, depending on the time of day and the presence of family members.
Challenges Faced
-
Power Outage Concerns: One of my main concerns was how the Nuki Bridge and Shelly sensors would handle a power outage. From my research, it seems that the Nuki Bridge requires manual reinitialization after a power cut, which involves pressing the button for 10 seconds and reconnecting to Wi-Fi. This process needs to be done physically, which could be inconvenient during an outage. I’m curious if there’s a way to automate this process or if the Nuki API can assist in reinitialization remotely.

PIN Code Sync Issues: Another challenge arose when creating PIN codes for guests during a power outage. The Shelly sensors, which are battery-powered, continued to function, but the Nuki Bridge couldn’t sync the newly created PIN codes once power was restored. This meant that guests couldn’t access the property as intended. I’m seeking advice on how to ensure PIN codes are synced automatically when the Bridge comes back online.
Fibaro Switch Installation Experience
While working on this project, I also installed a Fibaro Dimmer 2 switch, which has been a game-changer for controlling my lighting system. The process involved some trial and error, especially since I was connecting it to a three-way switch setup. However, once configured, it provided precise control over my lights, enhancing the overall automation experience.
Milight RGB Controller Configuration
Another aspect of my project was setting up an Milight RGB controller for my garden lights. I wanted to create custom lighting scenarios for different occasions, such asIndependence Day or Christmas. While the Milight app provided some preset modes, I was looking for more flexibility. I experimented with scripts to create custom color transitions and found that with some basic coding, I could achieve the desired effects. This experience taught me the value of exploring DIY solutions when off-the-shelf options fall short.
Lessons Learned
This project has been a fantastic learning experience. It highlighted the importance of thorough research and the value of community support when troubleshooting. I’d like to hear from others who have integrated Nuki and Shelly devices—what challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them? Additionally, I’m curious about best practices for ensuring seamless operation during and after power outages.
Looking Ahead
Moving forward, I plan to explore more automation scenarios, such as integrating my security system with my HVAC to create a more energy-efficient home. I’m also interested in delving deeper into rule scripting to create more complex automations tailored to my family’s needs.
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to your insights and experiences!
