Integrating Omron Sensors with HomeMatic for Affordable Presence Detection

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a project I recently completed that combines budget-friendly hardware with smart home integration. I’ve been experimenting with the Omron E3JK-R4M1 infrared light barrier, which I picked up for just around €6.50. Pairing this with a Homematic HM-MOD-EM-8 8-channel sender module, I’ve created a cost-effective presence detection system that integrates seamlessly with my HomeMatic setup.

The process was surprisingly straightforward. I started by removing the built-in relay in the Omron sensor, which freed up space for the HM-MOD-EM-8 module. I also added a 1 KOhm metal film resistor to ensure the LED indicator works properly. The module fits almost perfectly inside the sensor housing, requiring minimal modifications.

Here’s what you’ll need for the project:

  • Omron E3JK-R4M1 infrared light barrier (€6.50)
  • HM-MOD-EM-8 8-channel sender module (€20)
  • 1 KOhm metal film resistor (€0.15)
  • Short jumper wires
  • Heat-resistant adhesive tape for insulation
  • Optional 12V power adapter (€7)

The total cost comes in at under €27, making this a very affordable solution. Once everything is set up, the sensor communicates directly with the HomeMatic system, eliminating the need for additional relays and reducing power consumption.

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried similar projects or has tips for improving this setup. It’s been a rewarding experience to create a functional smart home component with such minimal investment!

Best regards,
Thorsten
