I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home automation setup, and I came across an interesting challenge that I thought I’d share with the community. A while back, I switched from Telegram to Nextcloud Talk for my messaging needs, and I wanted to integrate this with my OpenHAB system to send notifications for various events around the house. Let me walk you through my journey and the solution I found!
First, I wanted to use Nextcloud Talk for notifications because it’s more privacy-focused and integrates seamlessly with my existing Nextcloud setup. However, I wasn’t sure how to configure OpenHAB to send messages to Nextcloud Talk. After some research, I discovered that while there isn’t a direct binding for Nextcloud Talk, there’s a workaround using the Telegram binding with a bit of configuration magic.
Here’s what I did:
-
Set Up Nextcloud Talk: I created a new chat group in Nextcloud Talk where I wanted all my home automation alerts to go. This group includes my family members so we can all stay informed about what’s happening at home.
-
Configure OpenHAB: I used the Telegram binding in OpenHAB but instead of pointing it to the Telegram servers, I configured it to connect to the Nextcloud Talk gateway. This involved setting up a custom Telegram bot and pointing it to the Nextcloud Talk API endpoints. It took a bit of tweaking, but I found a helpful guide in the forums that walked me through the process.
-
Testing the Integration: Once everything was set up, I tested it by triggering a few events in OpenHAB, like motion detected in the hallway or the front door being opened. The notifications appeared in the Nextcloud Talk group just like I wanted them to!
-
Customizing Alerts: I also added some custom rules to make the alerts more informative. For example, when the motion sensor detects someone, it not only sends an alert but also includes a timestamp and the room where the motion was detected.
This integration has been a game-changer for me. It’s given me peace of mind knowing that I can stay updated on what’s happening at home, even when I’m not there. Plus, having everything in Nextcloud Talk means I can access the alerts from any device without needing to use a third-party app.
If anyone else is looking to integrate OpenHAB with Nextcloud Talk, I’d be happy to share more details or help troubleshoot any issues you might run into. Let’s keep the community knowledge flowing! ![]()
