Integrating Presence with Life360 for Smart Lighting Automation

I’ve been really impressed with how Presence and Life360 have allowed me to create a seamless smart home experience. I wanted to share my setup and a tip that might help others looking to achieve similar results.

The Goal:
I wanted my porch light to turn on when I arrive home and then automatically turn off after a set amount of time. This way, I don’t have to remember to switch it off, and it adds an extra layer of convenience to my daily routine.

The Challenge:
At first, I noticed that while the porch light would turn on when I arrived home, it would stay on indefinitely. I wanted a way to set a timer so that the light would switch off after, say, 15 minutes, without affecting the functionality when I was away.

The Solution:
After some research, I discovered that using a combination of the SmartLighting app and a custom smartapp could achieve this. Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Integration with Presence:

    • I linked my porch light to the Presence app via Life360. This meant that whenever I (or my family) arrived home, the porch light would automatically turn on.

  2. Setting Up the Timer:

    • I created a smartapp rule that triggers when the porch light is turned on by the Presence integration. This rule includes a timer that turns the light off after 15 minutes.

  3. Ensuring Manual Control Doesn’t Interfere:

    • I made sure that if I manually turned the light on while I was home, it wouldn’t interfere with the timer set by the smartapp. This was important to avoid frustration if I turned the light on for a quick task and didn’t want it to turn off immediately.

The Result:
This setup has been a game-changer for me. It adds a touch of convenience and security to my home without requiring constant manual adjustments. Plus, it’s been a great way to experiment with smart home automation and explore the potential of integrating different apps and devices.
