Hey everyone! I’ve been experimenting with integrating my Ring doorbell with my front lights, and I thought I’d share my journey and findings. This might be helpful for others looking to enhance their home security and convenience.
So, the goal was to create a system where the front lights turn on when the doorbell rings, stay on for a few minutes, and then turn off automatically—unless someone opens the door. It sounds straightforward, but there were a few nuances to work out.
First, I set up a piston to trigger the lights when the doorbell rings, but only between sunset and sunrise. That part was pretty smooth. The challenge came in figuring out how to keep the lights on if someone actually opens the door. After some research and trial and error, I realized I needed to add a condition that checks the front door’s status. If the door hasn’t been opened since the bell rang, the lights turn off after a set time.
To make it even more seamless, I added a random delay to the light activation. This way, the lights don’t come on instantly, which gives a more natural feel—like someone actually answered the door. It’s a small touch, but it makes a difference!
I also considered incorporating light sensors to ensure the lights only come on when it’s dark enough. This would prevent them from turning on during daylight, which is a more efficient solution than relying solely on sunrise and sunset times.
One thing I’m still tweaking is the timing. I want to make sure the lights stay on long enough for someone to answer the door but not so long that it’s a waste of energy. Finding that sweet spot is key.
If anyone has tips or tricks for optimizing this setup, I’d love to hear them! It’s been a fun project, and I’m excited to see how it evolves. Happy automating everyone! ![]()
