Integrating Shelly 1 as a Doorbell: A Fun DIY Project

Hey everyone, I’m really excited to share my recent project with you! I’ve been wanting to integrate my Shelly 1 into my home automation setup, specifically to act as a doorbell. After some research and tinkering, I managed to get it working, and I thought I’d walk through the process in case anyone else is interested in doing something similar. So, here’s what I did. I started by setting up a 12V DC power supply on my wall, which powers both the Shelly 1 and my existing doorbell. The Shelly 1 is connected to the doorbell button, and when someone presses the button, it triggers the Shelly 1 to send a notification to my smart home system. I also set up a toggle switch on the Shelly 1 to control how long the doorbell rings, which was a fun little customization. The setup involved wiring the Shelly 1 to the doorbell circuit. I had to make sure the positive and negative terminals were correctly connected to the Shelly’s N+ and L- ports. The doorbell itself is connected to the Shelly’s output (O) port, which controls the ringing. I also added a momentary switch to the circuit to complete the loop when the doorbell button is pressed.I configured the Shelly 1 as a toggle switch in my home automation software, which allows me to set a timer for how long the doorbell should ring. This was important because I didn’t want the doorbell to ring indefinitely if someone pressed the button too hard. I settled on a 5-second duration, which seems to work perfectly. One thing I was worried about was whether the Shelly 1 would interfere with my existing doorbell wiring. I was pleasantly surprised when everything worked seamlessly. The doorbell still rings as it always has, and now I also get a notification on my phone when someone presses the button. It’s a great way to stay connected without missing any visitors.I also considered adding some additional features, like integrating the doorbell with my security camera system. That way, when someone rings the bell, my camera could automatically start recording and send me a clip. I haven’t implemented that yet, but it’s definitely on my list of future projects.Overall, this project was a lot of fun and a great way to get more out of my existing smart home setup. If you’re looking for a simple DIY project that adds some extra functionality to your home, I highly recommend giving this a try. It’s affordable, easy to do, and the results are really satisfying. If anyone has any questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out! I’d love to hear how others have integrated their Shelly devices into their home automation systems.
