Integrating Shelly 1 as Garage Door Controller with Google Home

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience integrating a Shelly 1 into my smart home setup as a garage door controller. It’s been a fun project, and I thought I’d document the process and some tips for anyone looking to do something similar.

First, I’ll start by saying that the Shelly 1 is a fantastic little device. Its compact design and versatility make it perfect for projects like this. I’ve been using it to control my garage door, and it’s been working like a charm. The setup was straightforward—just a matter of connecting it to my Wi-Fi and configuring it through the Shelly app.

One thing I wanted to achieve was having the Shelly 1 display its input state in Google Home. I’ve seen others do this, and it’s a great way to keep everything consistent across your smart home ecosystem. After some research, I found that it’s possible to set up the Shelly 1 as a garage door device type in Google Home. This involved a bit of tweaking in the Actions on Google console, but the end result was worth it. Now, I can easily check the status of my garage door right from the Google Home app.

I also wanted to share a tip for anyone else looking to integrate their Shelly devices into Google Home. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed on your Shelly device. I encountered a minor issue during setup that was quickly resolved by updating the firmware. It’s a small step, but it can make a big difference in ensuring everything works smoothly.

Another thing I’ve been experimenting with is creating flows in my Homey setup to automate certain tasks. For example, I have a flow that triggers the garage door to open when I press a button on my smartphone. It’s a simple automation, but it adds a nice touch of convenience to my daily routine.

I’d love to hear from anyone else who has experience with Shelly devices or has successfully integrated their smart home devices into Google Home. Any additional tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Overall, I’m really happy with how this project turned out. It’s a great way to enhance your smart home setup, and the Shelly 1 is a fantastic device for the job. If you’re looking to add some smart functionality to your garage or anywhere else, I’d highly recommend giving it a try.
