I’ve been on a mission to upgrade my home’s security and lighting system, and I’m thrilled to share my journey with the community. After spending weeks researching and experimenting, I finally managed to integrate a wireless doorbell and smart lighting using Shelly devices. Here’s how it all came together!
The Challenge
I wanted to replace my old, wired doorbell with something more modern and integrate it with my smart home ecosystem. Additionally, I wanted the lighting outside my front door to be controlled automatically based on motion and doorbell presses.
The Solution
I decided to use a Shelly Pro 1 for the lighting and a Shelly 1 for the doorbell. The setup involved connecting both devices to my existing Wi-Fi network and configuring them through the Shelly app. The best part? I didn’t need to install any additional hardware or wiring beyond what was already in place!
How It Works
- Doorbell Setup: I mounted the Shelly 1 on my front door and connected it to the existing doorbell circuit. The Shelly app allowed me to set up custom notifications, so I receive a push notification whenever someone presses the doorbell.
- Lighting Automation: I connected the Shelly Pro 1 to my outdoor lights. Using Home Assistant, I created an automation that turns the lights on when the doorbell is pressed or motion is detected. The lights stay on for 30 seconds after the activity to ensure safety.
- Integration with Smart Home: Both devices are now seamlessly integrated with my smart home setup. I can control them through voice commands, check their status in the app, and even set schedules if needed.
The Results
This integration has been a game-changer for my home security and convenience. No longer do I worry about missing visitors or tripping in the dark. The system is reliable, easy to use, and has significantly improved my peace of mind.
Tips for Others
- Plan Your Wiring: Make sure you have access to neutral wires if possible, as it simplifies the setup.
- Use Neutral Wires: If you’re working with older wiring, using a Shelly 1L might be a better option as it doesn’t require a neutral wire.
- Test Configurations: Before finalizing, test all automations and notifications to ensure everything works as expected.
I’m excited to continue exploring more smart home projects and hope this story inspires others to try similar setups! Happy tinkering! ![]()
