Integrating Smart Lighting and Thermostat Control for a Seamless Smart Home Experience

Hello everyone, I’m excited to share my recent project and experiences with integrating smart lighting and thermostat control in my home. This journey has been a mix of learning, problem-solving, and creativity, and I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions!

My Smart Lighting Adventure
I recently installed a 32ft LED light strip in my living room, which has completely transformed the ambiance. However, I noticed that controlling the strips separately wasn’t ideal. They aren’t one long strip, so they go in opposite directions. This made it tricky to create smooth effects like a rainbow chase that flows seamlessly. I reached out to the community to see if a future firmware update could allow controlling both strips as one, enabling effects to flow in the same direction. It would be amazing to have one strip on while the other is off, or for the rainbow effect to chase consistently. If anyone has tips or similar experiences, I’d love to hear them!

Thermostat Control with a PID Algorithm
Another project I’m proud of is my hydronic heating system. It’s a bit of a beast—pumping hot water into a massive concrete slab. The challenge was that opening a door would send the thermostat into overdrive, causing the slab to heat up too much, leading to uncomfortable temperature swings. To tackle this, I developed a Proportional Integral Differential (PID) algorithm. This system adjusts the heating duty cycle, ensuring a slower, more stable response. It’s been running smoothly for over two years, and with the help of AI tools like ChatGPT, I’ve rewritten it in Groovy for better performance. I’m now exploring ways to extend its capabilities, like adjusting the cycle time and tracking temperature changes over longer periods. If anyone has experience with PID controllers or suggestions, I’d be grateful for the insights!

Smart Lighting Integration
On a lighter note, I’ve been experimenting with RGBIC LED strips from GOVEE. They’ve been fantastic, especially in my bedroom where I use music mode with a controller. It’s magical how the lights sync with the music, creating a dynamic atmosphere. However, I’d love to see an option in the app to designate a master strip that others can sync with over Wi-Fi. This would allow me to control all strips from one central location, even when I’m in a different room. If GOVEE is reading this, this feature would be a game-changer!

Community Feedback and Collaboration
I’m always eager to learn from others. If anyone has tips on integrating smart lighting or improving heating control, I’d love to hear them. Let’s keep the ideas flowing and make our smart homes even smarter!

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your feedback and suggestions!
