Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent experience integrating smart lighting into my home automation setup using Node-RED. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I thought I’d walk through what I’ve learned so far. If anyone has similar experiences or tips, I’d love to hear them! Getting Started with Node-RED I’ve been using Node-RED for a while now, but recently I decided to expand its capabilities by connecting it with my Arlo cameras. Initially, I was using IFTTT, but with its sunset, I knew I needed a more reliable solution. After some research, I stumbled upon the node-red-contrib-arlo package. It’s been a game-changer for arming and disarming my cameras, but I’m still trying to crack the motion and audio sensing features. If anyone has figured this out, please share your setup! A Fun Project: Automating Lights Based on Motion One of my favorite projects has been automating my outdoor lights using Node-RED. I set up a flow where motion detected by my Arlo camera triggers the lights to turn on. It’s such a simple yet effective setup. However, I ran into an issue where the lights would occasionally turn off prematurely. After some troubleshooting, I realized it was due to the sensitivity settings on the motion sensor. Fine-tuning these settings made a world of difference! Tips for Others - Start Small: Don’t try to automate everything at once. Start with a single room or device and build from there. - Documentation is Key: Even though it can be tedious, keeping notes on your flows and configurations will save you time in the long run. - Community Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help. The Node-RED community is incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. Looking Ahead I’m excited to explore more advanced automation scenarios, like integrating my lights with my thermostat for energy efficiency. If anyone has experience with similar setups, I’d love to hear about your strategies! Thanks for reading, and happy automating! ![]()
