Integrating Smart Switches and Cameras for Enhanced Home Security

I’ve been on a journey to enhance my home security system by integrating smart switches and cameras. It’s been a mix of challenges and triumphs, and I’d love to share my experiences with you all. The Challenge: I wanted to automate my home security by linking my GE smart switches with my Hikvision cameras. The goal was to trigger the cameras to start recording when motion is detected, using a PIR sensor for reliability. Initially, I faced confusion with wiring diagrams for 4-way switches and struggled with the camera’s motion detection features, which were too sensitive and caused false alarms. The Solution: After some research and trial and error, I found a workaround by using an external PIR sensor with pet immunity. I connected it to my Hikvision camera’s alarm input/output pigtail, which allowed me to trigger recording via an HTTP command. This setup has been incredibly reliable, with minimal false positives and quick reaction times. Key Steps: 1. Disable Built-in Motion Detection: I turned off the camera’s default motion detection to avoid conflicts. 2. Wire the PIR Sensor: Connected the PIR sensor to the camera’s alarm input. 3. Configure Alarm Settings: Set up the alarm input to trigger recording and adjusted the schedule to 24/7 monitoring. 4. Use HTTP Commands: Created simple scripts to send commands to the camera, starting and stopping recording based on the PIR sensor’s input. Tips for Others: - Research Wiring Diagrams: Spend time understanding the wiring diagrams to avoid mistakes. - Test Your Setup: Before fully committing, test each component individually to ensure everything works as expected. - Consider Buffer Time: Adding a buffer (like 5 seconds) ensures you don’t miss the initial motion capture. The Outcome: This integration has significantly improved my home security. The cameras now reliably record motion without constant false alarms, and I can monitor everything remotely. It’s been a rewarding project, and I’m excited to explore more automation possibilities in the future. If anyone has questions or suggestions for improvement, I’d be happy to discuss further! :rocket:
