Integrating Smart Thermostats for a Zoned HVAC System

I’ve been diving into the world of smart thermostats to upgrade my home’s HVAC system, and I wanted to share my journey and insights with the community. My setup is a bit unique—I have a 2-zone system with one HVAC unit that splits into upstairs and downstairs zones, each controlled by its own thermostat. After doing extensive research, I’ve narrowed my options down to a few key players, but I’m still weighing the pros and cons.

First, I’ve been leaning towards Z-Wave devices, particularly the Go Control Z-Wave thermostat. It’s affordable and integrates seamlessly with my Hubitat ecosystem. Plus, the fact that it’s Z-Wave means I can leverage local control without relying solely on the cloud. However, I’m a bit hesitant because it’s not the most visually appealing option out there. That said, functionality always trumps aesthetics for me!

Another contender is the Zen thermostat. It’s known for its sleek design and robust features, but I’m a bit confused about whether it will fully support my system’s wiring, especially since the upstairs thermostat doesn’t have a jumper wire for emergency heat. I’ve reached out to the manufacturer for clarification, but I’m still waiting on a response.

I’ve also considered the KONOz thermostat, but it seems to be out of stock, which is a bit frustrating. I’m curious if anyone has had success with this model in a similar setup.

On the other hand, I’ve been exploring Zigbee options as well, though I’m not ruling out Z-Wave just yet. The pricing and functionality of Zigbee devices are quite competitive, and I’m intrigued by the potential for more seamless integration with other smart home devices.

One of my main goals is to create a system that can be controlled through Alexa voice commands, with motion sensors adjusting temperatures based on which room I’m in. I also want to incorporate humidity sensors for better comfort control. I’m considering using a combination of smart thermostats and motion sensors to achieve this, but I’m not entirely sure how to structure the automations for optimal performance.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with similar setups or who has successfully integrated smart thermostats into a zoned HVAC system. Any tips, tricks, or recommendations would be invaluable as I continue to refine my plan. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other create smarter, more efficient homes!
